ある 秋の日の ことです。

「こんど うまれるときは、 にんげんに なりたいね」

たき火に あたりながら はなしを していると、ともだちの かわうそが やってきました。

「ぼく なり たい ね。 それ に は に たくさん いい こと すれ ば 、 いい んだ っ」 どこ で きい た の か 、 かわうそが いい いい まし た た。。。。。。。。 た た た た た

A long time ago, there lived in a forest, a rabbit, a fox and a monkey.

On an autumn day they were talking

“If I were to be born again, I would like to be a human” they said to each other.

Then came his friend, the otter,

“I would also like to be born a human, so that I can help everyone.”

 

 

それから 二、三日たった 日のことです。

川の ちかくで、 うさぎが たおれたいる たびびとを みつけました。

「たいへんだよ.

こんど うまれ とき 、 にんげん に なり たい と て い た どうぶつ たち 、 いそい で たびびと を に いき まし た。。

A couple of days later, the rabbit was jumping near the river when it found a human traveler lying on the bank.

“Help! A human needs our help!”. They all came to the call of the rabbit.

As the animals had said that they would like to be reborn as humans to help others, they did not hesitate to help the traveler.

 

 

たびびとは、 やせた おじいさんでした。

きている ものは ぼろぼろで、 木の えだの つえしか もっていません。

たかい ねつで、 うわごとを いっています。

どうぶつたちは おじいさんを、そっと じぶんたちの すみかへ つれて いきました。

そして、 あたらしい かれくさを ひいて、 びょうきの おじいさんを ねかせました。

The traveler was a very thin old man.

His clothes and belongings look very old and tattered, he only has a branch that he uses as a walking stick.

He has a very high fever, he is not feeling well.

The animals took the old man to their shelter.

There, they laid the grandfather on fresh grass to rest.

 

 

さるは、 あまい 木のみの くすりを、 おじいさんに のませました。

きつねは、 にがい くさの くすりを、 おじいさんに のませました。

おじいさんは、すこしずつ げんきになって、 やっと えがおを うかべました。

「すまないのう。 おまえたちに せわになって。。。。。」すると、 さるが いいました。

「ずっと ずっと、ここに いてください。 ぼくたち かわりばんこで、おいしいものを ごちぉそかう

The monkey gave the old man a medicine prepared with sweet fruits from the trees.

The fox gave the old man a medicine prepared with herbs.

The old man felt a little better, until he finally smiled.

“I’m sorry, I caused you a lot of trouble…”, said the old man.

To which the monkey replied “Please stay with us for a long, long time. Then we will bring you many delicious things to eat.”

 

 

さるは、 森の おくへ はしって いきました。

秋の 森には、たくさんの 木のみや いろいろな くだものが なっています。

さる は の 木 から あっち の 木 へ ながら 、 かかえ られ たい の 木 のみ や くだもの とって き まし た。。

「これ 、 すごい ごち そうだ。 わし では とても た べきれ ぬ さ あ 、 みんな で たべ」 たき 火 を かこん で 、 たのしい しょくじ が はじまり はじまり まし た た。。。

The monkey ran into the forest.

There are many trees and many fruits in the forest during the fall.

A monkey climbed several trees and collected many fruits.

“This is an amazing gift! I can’t eat much, so let’s eat everyone together.” They all came to the campfire and ate their delicious dinner.

 

すぎの日、こんどは きつねが でかけて いきました。

きつね は と おく の にんげん の すむ へ いき まし た。 、 はたけ の すみ から 、 や おこめ を すこし ずつ もらっ て 、 かえっ て き き まし た た。。。

三日めには、 かわうそが 川から たくさんの さかなを とてきました。

まい日 まい日、たいへんな ごちぞうです。

The next day it was the fox’s turn.

The fox went to a village where many people live. There, in a corner of the vegetables, he took some vegetables and rice, and returned to his friends.

On the third day, the otter caught a lot of fish from the river.

Every day they could eat very well.

 

つぎの日は、 うさぎが ごちそうをする ばんです。

うさぎは、 森の おくへ でかけて いきました。

秋の うつくしい 花が たくさん さいています。

とても いい においです。

けれども、 いくら きれいで いい かおりがしても、 花では おいしい ごちそうは できません。

うさぎは、 とほうに くれて しまいました。

The next day it was the rabbit’s turn.

The rabbit went to the forest.

There are many beautiful flowers in the fall.

A delicious aroma.

However, no matter how delicious it is, you cannot cook a good dish with flowers.

The rabbit did not know what to do.

 

 

うさぎは 夕がたになって、 もどって きました。

「なん。 なんい も もっ て こない のかい あさ から ずっと 、 を すかし て まっ て い のに」 みんな に いわ れ て 、 うさぎ は また 森 森 の おく へ 、 でかけ て まし た。 そして こんど こんど は はせおって、 かえって きました。

The rabbit returned at night with his friends.

“Why haven’t you brought anything to eat? We’ve been waiting hungry all day” his friends told him. The rabbit returned to the forest. And this time he collected a bunch of dry leaves and returned to his friends.

 

 

「そんな 、 どう する の さ」 三びき なか またち が み いる と 、 うさぎ は せおって た たきぎ を 、 たき 火 の なか へ つみあげ つみあげ まし た た。。。。。。。。 た た た た た

ちよろ ちよろ もえていた 火は、 ぱち ぱち 大きな おとを 立てて、もえあがりました。

“What are you going to do with it?” his three friends asked him while the rabbit threw the leaves into the fire.

The fire grew to the sound of the leaves crackling as they burned.

 

すると うさぎは、 だまって もえる 火を みつめている おじいさんに いいました。

「ぼく 、 なに も ごち そう する こと でき ませ ん。 から ぼく の 、 ぼく にく を 、 おなか いっぱい たべ て ください」 おじい さん は 、 、 びっくり し し まし た た た た。

「なに する。 まちなさい」 あわて て とめ と し まし た 、 うさぎ は は ね て は げしく もえる 火 の なか へ とびこん で いき いき まし た た。。。。。。。。 た た た た た

As the fire settled down, the rabbit said to the old man

“I can’t find anything good to eat, so please eat my meat until you don’t feel hungry anymore.” Grandpa surprised me.

“What are you doing? Stop!” He hastily tried to stop the rabbit, but the rabbit jumped into the flames of the campfire.

 

 

さるも きつねも かわうそも、 どうする ことも できません。

「おじい。 おじい さん 。。。。」 たき の まえ から たち あがっ おじい さん の あし に すがりつい 、 おろ おろ ふるえ て いまし た。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。

Neither the monkey, nor the fox, nor the otter could do anything to stop it.

“Grandpa, grandpa…” they said as they clung to the old man’s legs and sadly watched what was happening.

 

 

ところが おじいさんは、 いつのまにか とおとい おしゃかさまの すがたに かわって いたのの。

おしゃかさま は じぶん の ため に いのち を すて うさぎ に つよく こころ を れ て 、 手 を あわせ まし た。

たき火の 火は ますます はげしく もえあがりました。

However, the old one had been replaced by a Buddha.

Buddha, joined hands for the big-hearted rabbit who gave his life for him.

The fire in the campfire grew higher and higher.

 

 

そのときです。

ちいさな ほのおが ひかりのように かがやいて、 たくさんの うさぎの ほのおに ないりましし。

ちいさ な の ほのお は 、 た の し かなし そうに おどり ながら 、 の なか を とびは ね て いまし た。

At that time, many bunnies could be seen in the brilliance of the small flames.

The little bunnies went up in the sky dancing in a melancholic and nostalgic way (happy and sad at the same time).

 

ちいさな うさぎの ほのおは、 やがて 一つの 大きな ひかりの うさぎに なりました。

そして、 よぞらを かけのぼりながら まんまるの お月さまの なかへ、 きえて いきました。

A little rabbit in the flame turned into a big rabbit..

And, while flying in the sky, he entered the full Moon.

 

 

おしゃかさまは、 しんだ うさぎを お月さまに すまわせる ことに したのです。

その うさぎ すが た が 、 一ばん よく みえる は 、 秋 の うつくしい 月 の 十五 夜 の だ という はなし です。。

Buddha then decided to leave the rabbit’s shine on the Moon.

This is the story of the rabbit that is seen on the Moon during the autumn, on the fifteenth full Moon of the year.
