Google has added several popular Japanese characters to its Virtual Reality (AR) feature in mobile search. It had previously featured animals, historical artifacts, and dinosaurs. This new list is of characters from Japanese pop culture , including anime, television and video games, characters such as Pac-Man , Hello Kitty , robots from Evangelion and Gundam among others. The search works on the Android mobile version and on the Google app for iOS.

When you enter the names of the characters, you will see an option to “View in your space” under the main search result, and that will allow you to see a 3D model in your camera view. Models can appear at various degrees of scale, with the option to render at life size. Some characters like Hello Kitty appear a bit larger than they are supposed to but still look good!

On Android devices, the search can be done in the Google app or in any Android browser, as long as your phone supports the ARCore app. If your phone is not compatible, you will only see the character and you will be able to interact with him, see them move, even listen to messages or sounds more characteristic of each character. Google announced that given the current situation, you can enjoy showing characters around you to make AR videos and play your favorite scenes. Since we are more time at home, Google says: “Let’s enjoy the time at home with the 3D characters!”

The full list of characters is: Ultraman, Ultraman Zero, Ultraman Belial, Gomora, Evangelion (Test Type EVA-01) , Gundam (Odysseus Gundam, Xi, Gundam, Penelope) , Cogimyun, the drummers of Taiko no Tatsujin, Pac- Man, Pompompurin and Little Twin Stars .

According to Google data, Pac-Man is by far the most searched character on the list, with more than twice as many searches as Hello Kitty in second place.
