June is the beginning of summer in Japan, as well as the rainy season, which usually starts from mid-June (sometimes early in the month) to early July throughout the country. This month is traditionally known as ” minazuki ” or ” the month of water “. The temperature is moderate, but the humidity level is quite high and there are several days of rain.

Many people tend to avoid visiting Japan at this time, so if you don’t mind the rain and a bit of humid heat, you can enjoy your visit to Japan without the crowds, since there are many things that June can offer you and leave beautiful memories on your trip!

Hokkaido is a good place to start your trip if you come in this season since it is its best time in terms of temperature and little rain!

“Tsuyu” is the Japanese word for the rainy season and refers to the period when plums ripen on the trees and when rice fields in rural Japan are flooded by rain. This time of the year is very important since it determines the rice harvest, a product that sustains the population of Japan.

It doesn’t rain every day so you can plan a visit to rural Japan and see how rice is prepared and planted in the fields.

Another show that Japan can offer you in June is the flowering of the hydrangeas known in Japanese as “ajisai”. There are many colors and it is really a beautiful landscape that you will not get tired of seeing or taking many photos and selfies!

Since the rains are more frequent in this season, you can visit many places inland. The places we recommend are:

  • Museums of Natural History, Science and Technology such as the National Museum of Nature and Science Ueno, Tokyo
  • Aquariums in big cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya and of course Okinawa!
  • Kabuki Theatre, if you want to see a performance it is better to book your ticket in advance online.
  • Themed restaurants and cafes such as Doraemon, Hello Kitty, Gundam and Pokemon!

As tips, we also recommend you always carry an umbrella with you, if it is possible to fold it since there will not always be a place to leave it on your visits. Travel light clothing, although with a coat as some nights are still cool.

The best way to travel within Japan is by train, it is very punctual and convenient, although it can be expensive. For an even better price, we recommend traveling with the Japan Railways universal pass called JR PASS , which you can purchase on their website. This pass is purchased before traveling to Japan , arriving at the airport or at any train station , you can pick up your pass with proof of purchase .
