Tokyo is seen, by many worldwide, as the city of the future, being dramatized in numerous animations and science fiction movies. And it is that this city never lacks a great flow of creative ideas, innovation and visions for the future.

With the goal of envisioning what Tokyo will look like in 30 years, Sony’s creative division, The Creative Center, worked with four science fiction writers to create a prototype for a futuristic Tokyo set in 2050.

The project revolves around 4 themes; Well-being, Habitat, Meaning and Life. From these themes, science fiction designers and authors have created prototypes and short stories that will be exhibited from August 31, 2021 at the Sony Park Exhibition.

Sci-Fi prototyping is a technique that science fiction uses to propose a future, where creators work backwards to study and understand what is required to achieve said proposed future.

Given the uncertainty that accompanies the global pandemic, thinking about the future has become a very interesting but complex topic to navigate. For this reason, the great creativity of science fiction writers has gained the attention of the world, as they connect our current reality to a possible future.

Sony’s Tokyo 2050 Project features a direct and detailed perspective from the designers and writers to introduce us to this proposed future. Throughout half a year, the people involved in the project took part in joint activities that led to the result presented in each of the four themes.

The project was carried out with the advice of the WIRED Sci-Fi Prototyping Institute , an organization that specializes in the use of Sci-Fi Prototyping to develop the future of industry and companies.
On this occasion, the realization of the prototype had the collaboration of the writers Taiyo Fujii, Miyuki Ono, Ryo Mugihara and Itsuki Tsukui.

Science fiction stories and final prototypes explore the possibility of a better future, and help identify Sony’s role in future society. These designs will be presented during the project “ONE DAY, 2050/ Sci-Fi Prototyping” Sony Park, starting on August 31
