MIYAGI Traditional Kokeshi Doll
Traditional Kokeshi dolls (こけし) are a craft unique to the Tohoku region. It is said that they were born as souvenirs for children in the hot spring areas of the region at the end of the Edo period (1603 – 1867)
Kokeshi dolls would all seem the same at first glance, but if you look closely, you can see that there are differences in hairstyles, patterns, and facial expressions. These changes are according to the place of origin. Miyagi Prefecture is one of the largest Kokeshi doll producers in the Tohoku area where there are 5 types of Kokeshi dolls: Naruko Kokeshi , Togatta Kokeshi , Yajiro Kokeshi , Sakunami Kokeshi and Hijiori Kokeshi .
Kokeshi dolls are made up of only the head and the body and combine the beauty of extremely simplified form and innocent and sweet expression. Their charm is that they have a clean and pretty appearance, as well as the most simplified modeling beauty, and are inherited today through their unique shapes and patterns. It is a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Commerce and Industry.
A nice souvenir to take home on your trip to Japan and Miyagi Prefecture!
