The Izu Islands are a volcanic group of islands that stretch from the south to the east of the Izu Peninsula on the main island of Honshū, Japan. Miyakejima Island is on top of an active volcanic chain that has erupted 6 times in the last century. However, the danger lies not only in volcanic eruptions, but in the highest concentration of poisonous gases (mainly sulphide) in the world, which regularly seeps to the surface.

The residents were evacuated from the island in the year 2000 due to high volcanic activity and the dangerous increase in the level of poisonous gases. They were able to return in 2005, but now they must carry a mask with them at all times to protect themselves from the gas in case the levels suddenly rise.

Definitely an extreme way of living!

Izu is very easy to get to by train , including the super- fast Shinkansen or bullet train , making it a comfortable ride from Tokyo. And although it is possible to travel by plane, bus or boat, the train offers the best prices and convenience of all . To get an even better price, we recommend traveling with the Japan Railways universal pass called JR PASS , which can be purchased on their website. This pass is purchased before traveling to Japan , arriving at the airport or at any train station , you can pick up your pass with proof of purchase .
