A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend on a street in the southwestern Japanese city of Fukuoka earlier this week, police said.

The attack happened despite the fact that police issued an order last year for the man, Susumu Terauchi, to stop harassing Miki Kawano after she broke up with him. He has confessed to the crime, police said.

Terauchi, a 31-year-old restaurant worker, allegedly stabbed Kawano, 38, more than 10 times around 6:15 pm Monday near the JR Hakata station.

Police found Terauchi’s fingerprints at the scene, investigative sources said.

Kawano had checked with police several times since October, alleging that Terauchi accosted and followed her.

The police issued a warning against him the same month and prohibited him from approaching her based on the stalker regulation law the following month.

Police located the suspect on a city street Wednesday morning, voluntarily escorting him to a nearby police station, the sources said.

Security camera footage near the crime scene showed Kawano leaving his nearby office and then arguing with Terauchi on a highway, according to police.

He then stabbed her with what appears to be a kitchen knife before leaving the scene with the gun in a bag.
